John was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. He has one sister who lives in Texas and does Public Health research. His first job was cleaning carts at a golf course and this instilled a life-long love of the game. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder for his undergraduate degree in History. From there, he moved back to Denver and started working in Higher Education in financial aid. While working at Ashford University, he obtained his master’s degree in Education, specializing in English Language Learners. Following a trip to Europe where he taught English in Prague, Czechia, he returned to his hometown and continued working in Higher Education. He enrolled at the University of Denver and obtained his Doctorate in Education in 2018. While working on his dissertation, he taught English to adults in Aurora, worked on an assessment team for Early Childhood Math research, and started the off-campus housing department at DU. Now at Bel-Rea, he is in student affairs and works to support students with academic and community resources, both on and off-campus. In his free time, he likes to ride his bike (mountain and road), garden (favorite thing to grow is peas in the spring), read, fly fish, hike, and spend time with fiancé, his dog Amelia, and cat Fritz.
