Job Description
Summary:
ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (ASNA) is the premier training center for high-quality, high-volume companion animal sterilization. Altering an average of 20,000 shelter, rescue, and publicly owned companion animals annually, ASNA has trained more than 6,500 veterinary professionals and fourth year veterinary student externs at our campus in Asheville, NC since 2005. ASNA is proud to set the bar for the standard of care in HQHVSN and provide world-class spay and neuter surgical instruction to veterinary professionals and students.
The Manager, Registered Veterinary Technicians (MRVT) is responsible for overseeing and supporting the performance of a team of ASNA Registered Veterinary Technicians. The primary goal is to create and maintain a team of veterinary technicians that excels in providing the medical support required to operate a state-of-the-art HQHVSN surgical and training facility. This position requires a person with diplomatic and outstanding communication skills, an insatiable desire to impart knowledge, an innate ability to foster teamwork, and an unrelenting determination to elevate each individual team member to be high functioning and perform their duties consistent with best practices. Fundamental expectations for this role are maintaining a consistent presence and involvement in daily medical/surgical operations, training internal and external trainees, participating enthusiastically on the Leadership Team, and possessing a sincere commitment to the success of this team of veterinary medical professionals to support the mission of ASNA and the ASPCA. This position reports to the Director, Medical Support [Logistics or Operations] (DMSL or DMSO) and is based in Asheville, North Carolina.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Operational Support and Training (75%)
- Participate in relationships and communications with private sector veterinarians, professional associations, professional advisors, vendors, transport partners, public clients, mentees, and internal ASPCA departments and professionals
- Provide regular surgical, medical, and training operations support and fulfill every duty of the Registered Veterinary Technician
- Be well versed in ASNA/ASPCA protocols, procedures, and standards of care, and train and guide implementation of these subjects to all audiences
- Provide a safe and compassionate environment for staff, clients, and animals in ASNA care
- Ensure that all team members have received training in, and have mastered, low-stress animal handling skills and that they implement these handling techniques consistently in all their interactions with animals
- Ensure compliance with DEA regulations and ASNA protocols for controlled substance standard operating procedure
Leadership (20%)
- Practice and encourage open and transparent communications in all interactions, seek out regular feedback from team and peers, and receive feedback in the constructive spirit intended
- Supervise and support the Registered Veterinary Technicians by creating and maintaining a team of high-functioning veterinary medical professionals that excels in the duties required to support ASNA operations:
- Lead direct reports through regular 1×1 meetings and annual performance management processes including but not limited to performance reviews, merit process, and goal setting
- Provide unified management support to ensure that all team members have the tools and support needed to be successful and high performing
- Provide regular feedback to direct reports utilizing routine management techniques
- Serve on the Leadership Team
- Support other workstream efforts
- Instill the guiding principle that everyone can, and should, actively support the animals’ behavioral and mental health in everything they do
- Engage in all necessary activities of the veterinary technician team lifecycle including but not limited to interviewing, hiring, training, performance coaching, succession planning, salary changes, promotions, and terminations
Professional Development and Organizational Support (5%)

- Enforce all policies related to operational and environmental safety of patients, staff, and visitors related directly to medical operations
- Serve in any role as needed and qualified for to support all daily operational processes for successful and safe completion of surgery and training program goals
- Fully engage in the self-performance management process including annual reviews, regular feedback sessions, required compliance training, and goal setting
- Maintain all licensures and credentials pertinent to the position
- Actively seek individual development opportunities in relation to job function
- Travel up to 5% as needed
- Under the supervision of the DMSL or DMSO, and in respect to veterinary technician operations, ensure:
- Smooth and efficient operation of ASNA surgical, medical, and training programs
- Program policies and strategies support ASNA’s high standards of quality and best practices
- All aspects of operations are enforced with campus-wide consistency and adherence to all federal, state, and local regulations
- A positive learning environment across campus supportive of ASNA culture
- Participate in assigned ASNA department and program specific projects, cross-departmental working groups, and any other assigned commitments to support ASPCA’s 2030 goals
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the DMSL or DMSO or the ASNA Senior Leadership Team

- Possess valid NC registered veterinary technician license or obtain one within 60 days of hiring
- Provide a valid driver’s license upon hire and pass a motor vehicle history check demonstrating a safe driving history.
- Possess working knowledge of basic computer/technology skills including email and Microsoft Word
- Ability to lift 35 lbs/16 kgs without assistance and over this weight with assistance, and the ability to consistently stand, bend, lift, and climb during the course of a regular work shift
Education and Work Experience:
- Degree of Registered Veterinary Technician or equivalent from an American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (AVMA CVTEA) accredited program OR a Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) accredited veterinary technology program
- Passing of the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE)
- Possess valid NC registered veterinary technician license or obtain one within 60 days of hire
- Minimum 2 years as a registered veterinary technician in a clinical setting
- Preferred 1 year as a HQHVSN veterinary technician
- Preferred 1 year in a teaching, intensive coaching, or learning environment
- Preferred 1 year management experience
- Fear Free Shelter certification within 60 days of hire
Compensation and Benefits:
Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary range for this role is set forth below and may be modified in the future.
The target range for this position is $74,000 – $79,000 annually.
