Job Description

Job Summary: This role supports the veterinary staff in ensuring quality care for all pets and ensuring a safe and effective environment at the shelter, foster home and clinic. Areas of responsibility encompass treatments, rounds, inventory and ordering support, surgery support, and cleaning at the shelter and clinic. Cross training at the clinic and the shelter will be required. We are open to varying levels of experience and there are three levels to work toward based on skills known.

Primary Responsibilities

  • General technician duties, including but not limited to:
    • Diagnostic testing
    • Administering vaccinations
    • Administering medications, both oral and injectable
    • Filling medications
    • Radiology
    • Customer education
  • Animal handling and general treatment
  • Assisting surgery
    • Induction
    • Recovery from surgery/anesthesia
    • Patient record updates
    • Cleaning/wrapping of surgery packs
    • Sterile surgical assistance duties
  • Continuous cleaning and disinfecting of all areas
  • Foster program, including but not limited to:
    • Caring for foster animals while at shelter
    • Facilitating and cultivating foster homes
    • Scheduling foster animals to return to shelter for updated treatment or adoptions in a timely manner
    • Coordinating and facilitating wellness and illness group and individual visits
  • Record keeping (manual and computerized)
  • Observing animals for medical and behavioral disorders
  • Walking dogs
  • Other duties as assigned
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks with interruptions in an energetic environment with the pressure of periodic heavy workloads
  • Ability to anticipate and identify problems and needs and solve them and/or communicate them appropriately
  • Capability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Working knowledge of current veterinary medical procedures preferred
  • Computer literate
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Capability to work in a fast paced environment with ability to multi-task
  • Good driver record
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and climates
  • Ability to work with animals of varying temperament in noisy conditions
  • Ability to work with cleaning materials
Work Schedule
  • The schedule for this position includes weekday, weekend, and holiday hours and a flexible work schedule
  • Hours and days are subject to change based on department demands
Performance Measures
  • Ensures pet’s medical concerns and treatments are completed by the end of the day
  • Provide effective support for all medical staff
  • Proper documentation noted for all medical exams
  • Proper adequate aid to other teams to ensure proper medical attention
  • Improves methods of workflow among all JHS team members
