About Us…

History of the Southwest Animal Emergency Clinic

In early winter of 2005, the veterinarians of Southern Utah and St. George met to consider the value of a local emergency clinic to serve the St. George area, Cedar City, and southern Nevada, Mesquite area.

Some of us had come from more urban areas that offered after hours emergency clinics and realized the benefits to our clientele as well as to the regular veterinarians of having such a facility in St. George.

By April 25, 2005, the funding and organization of the clinic, to be known as: The Southwest Animal Emergency Clinic, was in place, and clinic doors opened to a new service to help obtain emergency medical services for all small animals in this area. The clinic was originally located in the East Ridge Mall at 435 N. 1680 E.  The clinic moved to it’s current location of 1067 E Tabernacle in st George in August of 2013.

Dr. Mark Wells was the first Chief of Staff with experience of practicing veterinary medicine for 35 years in California. In 1975 he established a fulltime veterinary emergency clinic and has practiced emergency medicine for many years. He helped establish this emergency clinic in St. George and has aided its success.

In November, 2010, Dr. David Rose became Chief of Staff, after working at Southwest Animal Emergency Clinic for 6 months as an Associate Veterinarian. Dr. Rose comes to Southwest Animal Emergency Clinic with nearly 20 years of academic medicine experience as well as working in several large emergency clinics in Southern California. His stated goal is “to bring state-of-the art emergency and critical care veterinary medicine, at a reasonable cost, to the pet owners of St. George.”

The emergency clinic is supported by the 19 local veterinarians and has helped improve the health and life of our area dogs and cats.

The operating board now includes Drs. Bruce Jacobson. Kelly Houston, Craig Brinkerhoff, Scott Hannig and Rebecca Thode.
